From copy editor to associate editor of Poynter.org

So, I have some good news. I recently had my annual review and found out that I’ve been promoted to associate editor of Poynter.org. I feel honored, and I’m excited to embrace the responsibilities of my new role.

For the past couple of years, my title has been copy editor. While I respect all the hard work that copy editors do, I never liked having this title. I mostly report and line edit stories, so I’ve always thought the “copy editor” title was a bit misleading.

As associate editor, I’ll continue to report and write stories for the site and will oversee the new How To section of Poynter.org, which I helped create. I’m also responsible for Joe Grimm’s “Ask the Recruiter” column and for the site’s “Diversity at Work” column.

When I came to Poynter for a year-long fellowship in 2007, I never expected I’d be at the institute for this long; I figured I’d stay for a year and then move back to Massachusetts. Then, life happened. I really enjoy being in Florida and have carved out a life for myself here. That’s not to say I’m going to stay here forever. But it is to say that I enjoy the work I do and feel as though I’m still getting a lot of great opportunities to grow as a journalist at Poynter. Here’s to continued growth and new opportunities.

Today’s a happy day! 🙂
